Bioshock is beautiful (and bloody scary)

Bioshock 1

If you can stomach the download – it’s over a gigabyte, and thanks to my patchy wi-fi it took eight hours to download – the Xbox 360 demo of Bioshock is stunning. You get about an hour of gameplay, and if that’s representative of the game as a whole it’s going to be incredible. The ruined art deco environments are beautiful, the gameplay’s exciting and the atmosphere is genuinely unsettling.

Please please please let the game be as good as the demo.

By all accounts it is as good.

I was at 90% last time I looked.

  2. Is there a Wii version?

  3. Gary

Fraid not. Xbox and PC for now, maybe PS3 later.

  4. mupwangle

I wouldn’t expect most PS3/360 or PC games to be ported to the wii. At best it’ll get PS2 ports or really crap versions.

It really, really needs some decent new IPs. :-(

Had a quick go of the demo. Seems quite good. Then I realised that, since it appears to be the beginning of the game, I’d have to do it all again when the game came. So I stopped.

Apparently it’s more of a Director’s Cut than an entire level. Or at least, I think I read that somewhere.

    > [ninty] It really, really needs some decent new IPs.

Yeah, I’d agree. I’ve had mine for ages and I’ve got Wii Sports and Resi 4. And that’s it.

Probably. But since I’d already ordered it from Play it seemed a bit of a waste of time. ;-) Pretty though. Only got as far as the bit after you get the plasmids. Then I used them all up in 2 seconds, realised I didn’t know where to get more, that it was coming up on 1am and I needed to go to bed and also that I was slightly pissed after the quiz night in the pub.

    >>I’ve had mine for ages and I’ve got Wii Sports and Resi 4.

I’ve got wii sports (which I still play a fair amount), Zelda (I got stuck and haven’t been back for about 6 months), Warioware (Only play when people are around), Rayman’s Raving Rabbids (Ditto), Wii Play (only got it cos I wanted a second controller) and Resident Wiivil 4 (Which I’ve had for 2 weeks and havedn’t opened). I’ve also got crazy taxi (crap but fun) and Rogue Leader (Really, really hard but excellent Star Wars game) for the Gamecube.

I have to admit I’ve hardly played anything except EDF for the last few weeks. I’m determined to finish it. At 51% at the moment. Can only finish level 1 on Hardest and nothing at all on the bastard level. :-)

That’s where the AI gets brilliant – set someone on fire, they run into water and put it out. So you hit them with an electric bolt, bwah hah hah.

EDF really is superb. One of the dumbest games I’ve ever played – might go back into it again tonight actually.

The thing about the Wii for me is that it’s undeniably brilliant (Wii Sports is genius) and things like Wii Fit sound like a hoot, but there are very few games I’m interested in. Metroid sounds all right I suppose, but it isn’t getting me excited. That, and the Wiimote is murder on the wrists, so self-preservation means I need to be Wii-free until something jaw-droppingly brilliant comes out. So far all the things I want to play in the foreseeable future are Xbox games.

BTW is there any likelihood that Play or someone else will ship Bioshock early?

Try the first few levels at hard. You get much better weapons. I’ve got a gun that fires 10 shots at 200 damage each (AF-19ST) and a 10 shot rocket launcher (Cascade) with the same. It rocks. I’ve done all normal, all but 9 levels in easy and all but about 15 in hard. 2 in hardest and none in bastard. My bloke has 2500 health now. Still can’t do bastard.

Don’t think so. The breach of street date thing seems to have been exaggerated. Play need to post most things about 3 days before you get them and they haven’t shipped mine yet so there is no way it would be here before the 21st at the earliest anyway.

According to metacritic, the lowest review score so far (11 reviews) is 94. Its currently sitting at an average of 98.

  12. Gary

    Woo-hoo! It’s arrived early!

  13. mupwangle

    Really? Git.

  14. Gary

    Heh.

  15. Rogue Leader (Really, really hard but excellent Star Wars game) for the Gamecube.

I nearly bought a GameCube for RL: can you play it on Wii?

  16. mupwangle

Yup. Wii is 100% backwards compatible with the GC. I think you need a GC controller and a memory card though. (GC games cannot access wii flash memory or SD cards)

  17. mupwangle

I’ve bought my GC controller and memory card from this woman – http://stores.ebay.co.uk/sweetii-cubes_W0QQcolZ2QQdirZQ2d1QQfsubZQ2d999QQftidZ2QQtZkm She seems reliable. Not sure if her prices are cheap or dear though.

I just bought the game of a random ebay person.

  18. OK thanks. I see she is selling Gamecubes for £25! Obv not new though.

  19. mupwangle

    Bioshock still hasn’t come. :-(

  20. Well I love the first one and if this second part it’s only as good as the first it will be enormous and people will like it so much.
Thanks for a preview of that game.
