well if they think the only other option is accounting, that desn't speak well for their imagination - for such 'creative' types. As for getting drunk and believing what the camp followers tell them, well thats done for an awful lot of *much* more capable types before the anyone had even thought of advertising...

I suspect they constantly berate themselves for not studying accounting a bit harder, so they could sit in an airconditioned office like cousin Marv and occasionally get home before midnight.

On the other hand, they certainly do better than Marv at parties, when the hardships fade into the alcoholic stupor, and they start to believe what the shiny-eyed women gathered around them are saying...

Oh bollocks: you sit there with your mouth hanging open, saying "Cor, if only I could 'ave a go at making one o' them! What larks, eh!"

I know you do; there's no point denying it.

>What none of the viewing public realises... ...all you do is wait. And wait. And wait some more

Don't be so patronising. I'm part of the veiwing public and I'm perfectly well aware how boring it can be shooting an advert. I just don't give a damn.

> But is it art?

God knows, but the resulting ad will be spectacular - if you follow the flickr link and check out the chap's more recent pics you'll see the finale. It looks mental.

I think the worst example of entertainment industry glamour is the gig soundcheck. Specifically, the "getting the bass drum right" bit of the soundcheck.

Load in at 4pm, sit around till 6.30pm, listen to the kick drum till 7.45pm, cram all the rest of the soundcheck in (three bands, four if you're unlucky) by 8.30pm, hang around till 9.30pm, listen to other bands you don't really like until 10.30pm, go onstage, discover the sound engineer's pissed off and left an understudy so the soundcheck was wasted, play to three drunks and a murderer, go offstage again, spend two hours dismantling the gear and another two hours getting it home.

ROCK! \m/ \m/

But is it art?

I went on my first ad shoot when I was about ten. They came to our school and wanted a whole bunch of kids. It was unutterably boring. Even the free soft drinks (was a soft drink ad) palled after a while. Not having learned my lesson, I did a few more as a student and even a couple of TV shows. What none of the viewing public realises is the huge amount of preparation and organisation that goes into shooting the piece of film that gets maybe seconds of screen time in the final cut. While all that equipment is being moved, lighting set up, camera angles experimented with, sound checks made, etc etc, all you do is wait. And wait. And wait some more.
