Writing the editor's welcome bit at the beginning of mags is equally stressful -- and in order to appear as current as possible it usually gets written last when there are all sorts of other nightmare things going on (trying to send pages, chasing late images and copy, finalising the cover, preparing ads to go in sister titles, etc.) and so, understandably, many editors resort to a "what's in this issue" piece, which, while not especially exciting, does fill the space. Of course, you don't have that luxury. Perhaps you could do a "what's in my fridge" piece for those issues when you lack inspiration.
