>And Prison Break's excellent.

Really? every bit I've ever seen of it has been utter pish of the worst kind. having said that, this has meant that I turn off it as soon as I see it now ;-)

> the inexplicable attempt to make us watch prison break

What's inexplicable about trying to get us to watch one of their shows?

And Prison Break's excellent.

> Copyright? or just taste?

In the case of Law & Order, taste. The original music is just dull made-for-TV cop-show-by-numbers hackery, not some band's big hit. I think 5 just reckoned that it would cause people to turn off the TV before they got into the show, and they're probably right.

>Usually different publishers representing

Yeah i thought that. I just wondered if there were other "soft" reasons why they change it...

I wokrs both ways though, I mean coldplays near constant use on ER a while back just killed their career didn't it ;-)

> Copyright? or just taste?

Usually different publishers representing the same act in different territories. It's why some acts' stuff appears on ads in other countries when their UK contracts prohibit ad use.

Dull but true.

I wonder why they change it? Copyright? or just taste?

I mean I asume hallmark pick up law and order as cheap as possible, while five clearly have some large scale purchase + marketing deal (witness the number of trails featuring stars of these programs, the inexplicable attempt to make us watch prison break). Does that mean that get the chaneg the music if they like? Five just started showing Grays anatomy. Living used to show that, and it too pushes it's american imports hard (since apart from most haunted they are the only thing it shows that people watch). I wonder if either/both them changed the music there....

In the US, House's theme tune is Teardrop by Massive Attack. Here, it's a tune that's similar enough to Teardrop to be really annoying.

Hallmark use the original music. Try watching it on 5 sometime. The difference is striking.

>No, occasionally he beats witnesses up, too. And goes undercover as a pimp-cum-drug-dealer.

Ah, I'm obviosuly basing my opion on a reduced sample of episiodes.

>Have you heard the original American theme music

Hmmm, stangely I have seen law and order while in the states but I don't recall the theme music. Anyway, 'the Hallmark channel' is showing law and order *every* time I look at it, I wonder which version they have.

And no I don't understand what the connection between hallmark and cop shows is either...

Vincent d'Onofrio as Detective Robert Goren. He is the new Columbo. Only more so. And there is no subject on Earth he hasn't studied. In doctorate-smacking depth. Class. I love it when he interrogates mad people in mad-person language. He's had some sort of nervous breakdown due to overacting (no, really), so it's going to be Chris Noth for the second half of this series.

> But surely it's best feature is it's two spins offs.

Absolutely not. Much as I love the spin-offs, the original is the best.

> they don't nother letting you in on the characters lives.

Even better than that: they do let you in on their lives, but only through tiny details; asides and occasional overheard phone-calls etc. So you pick up little details after watching twenty episodes, instead of the first episode being almost entirely about a detective arguing with his wife.

> is that the one the bloke died from?

Jerry Orbach? No, he died, but I don't think it was Law & Order that actually killed him. He was the candlestick in Beauty & The Beast, trivia fans.

> ice-T as someone who's only role on the team appears to be making tea for this weeks drug addict case breaking witness

No, occasionally he beats witnesses up, too. And goes undercover as a pimp-cum-drug-dealer.

Have you heard the original American theme music? It's the worst shite imaginable. Channel 5 obviously decided that was the one thing that needed to be improved.

I am to Law & Order what Gary is to NYPD Blue.

There was some US sitcom that used exactly the same set as NYPD Blue. Which was a bit disconcerting.
