Spam and the law

Here’s a thing. It’s illegal for UK firms to spam UK email addresses, provided said addresses are personal - businesses can still be spammed silly. Anybody know how self-employed people are classified in terms of anti-spam law?

If the email address is say johndoe@yahoo.com, then that could be classed as personal e-mail. Proving it is the hard part. You could have the 2 accounts and play one off against the other ie send your own personal messages back and forth. Or just reply to the spam threatening to sue their ass if they continue to spam your personal email account.

Or just forget it all and get pissed!

I wouldn’t've thought proving that your email address is a personal one should be too difficult. It doesn’t contain your surname and the domain name is not a company’s name. first-name-only@a-hobby-that-has-nothing-to-do-with-your-work.co.uk? Well, if the spammer has received a work-related email from you, they’ve got a case. Otherwise, there’s no way they can convincingly claim that it appeared to be a work address.
