They also believe that women and ethnic minority firefighters are a sin against god. Although to be fair, they think speed cameras are too, so they're not all bad.

When you read their stuff it's like a giant Daily Mail letters page.

I doubt many people will support them. If you look at their site they claim that various declarations of human rights are blasphemous. And that the police are all gay and that there is no difference between abortions and the jewish holocaust.

Yeah, I updated the blog post to reflect that. I'm still angry about it - if I were a christian (I'm not anything) I'd be absolutely furious that these dingbats claim to speak for millions of normal, considerate people.

It's all about power, of course. Much as we've seen in the US, certain people have discovered that they can use religion as a convenient way to build a power base and give them a profile they wouldn't otherwise have been able to get. I could say a number of uncharitable things about such people, but for once I'll bite my tongue: too much work today to have the luxury of getting angry again.

As someone wrote on a messageboard somewhere (quote isn't exact): "I wish Jesus would hurry up and come back, because these people need some serious smiting".

I did see a christian weblog yesterday getting rather upset about CV and pointing out that their antics are a perversion of the christian message...

In the end it was only £3000 (it was £10 per ticket to one of the performances but it was poorly attended) but that doesn't really make it better. :-(

As the joke goes: Ever looked inside a cancer research shop? They're not doing research - they're selling clothes! No wonder we haven't found a cure!

Ahem.

See, now you've made me angry too. I am very cynical anyway about large charity organisations who are able to pay huge amounts of money to staff, for advertising and to print and produce (my pet peeve) unsolicited mail begging for more money. The same ones who are sitting on huge piles of cash and make researchers beg for the dough to help them in their endeavours to find cures for various diseases and illnesses. This story of a charity who can afford to turn down a donation has only served to make me even more so. Just another reason why I pick and choose which charities I donate to very, very carefully.
