Here’s a thing I don’t understand. I know BB kills the sound feed when people talk about brand names or whatever, but last night over about 30-odd minutes they were clearly talking about the racism stuff. Why was the sound feed killed for that? I thought BB was all about showing gritty reality?
They only kill the sound if their lawyers think that they can be sued under libel laws and the like. I don’t think under current laws they could be sued for having Jade Goody or whoever expressing an opinion.
I didn’t realise that C4 was publicly owned. I wouldn’t be surprised if CBB gets pulled in the next 24 hours. The good thing there is that experts reckon it would damage the whole BB franchise to the point that it might end altogether.
Oh, they also cut out anything that mentions other people not in the house – so if Jade was saying something about her mate who is asian to prove she wasn’t being racist then it would be cut.
Personally I think this is more of a class thing than a racial thing to be honest.
I think it’s simply an envy and stupidity thing. Where the race comes in is that it gives Jade an opportunity for some extra insults, mainly, from what I can see, through absent-mindedness and sheer stupidity. But if the race difference didn’t exist, she’d just be insulting in a different way.
It’s the first time anything interesting enough to make me watch the show has happened. Excellent last night, watching Jade try to answer the question “Why did you refer to Shilpa as ‘Fuckawalla’?”
“Well, I can’t remember her name, can I? She’s Indian, ain’t she, so she’s got some weird name I can’t remember. It’s not like she’s called, you know…” Then a huge long pause as she tried to think of an example of a normal English surname. It took her at least thirty seconds. Then another twenty-odd for a second example. And you realise, my God, this eejit really can’t remember the name “Shetty”; it’s far too complicated for her brain to process. She has trouble thinking of “Jones”. Fantastic.
And Shilpa’s superb put-down: “Your claim to fame … is this.” Nice.
Well I wouldn’t have thought so until the Indian government started grumbling. There’s a difference between a few people being offended and a diplomatic incident.
Channel 4 is to donate the profits from tonight’s Celebrity Big Brother eviction vote for either Shilpa Shetty or Jade Goody as it seeks to limit the growing political fallout from the racism row.
Last night Goody and Danielle Lloyd, two of the housemates involved in the alleged racist bullying, apologised to Bollywood actress Shetty, in a move likely to be have been prompted by Channel 4 and Celebrity Big Brother producer Endemol.
A Big Brother spokeswoman said the phone vote money would be distributed between charities nominated by the contestants at the end of the show.

Forgot to add, there’s a superb quote from the BNP spokesperson:

The shooting bit is the only thing I’ve ever agreed with the BNP on.
It depresses me about how many people down here vote for the BNP. Most of them seem normal too.

I do think Metro missed an opportunity. “Big Brother is not racists, say racists” would have been a much better headline.

Racist, even.

It just gets better. Danielle’s family have issued a statement:

It smacks of the playground to me.

I would. I can imagine some sort of worthy PR stunt, but not pulling it while the ratings are climbing.
I still don’t understand the appeal of BB, though.

> I didn’t realise that C4 was publicly owned.
Up until a few years ago, any ad revenue they made had to be given to ITV. British broadcasting law, eh?

I don’t mean by C4 – I mean by the government.
